Self Interview - cellular forms

Q. Why are you drawn to cellular forms and imagery?

A. I like spheres, circles, organic forms and patterns that are made of self similar shapes. As a child I was fascinated by sea urchins; I felt I had struck gold if I found one on the beach. I also had a strong interest in astronomy, and eventually physics - how these forms appear to exist on such different levels of existence - from atoms to planets. I remember being around the age of 7 or 8, looking at the car dash board, thinking that everything must be made up of small dots, connected to each other, to be able to make different objects. I don't know how I knew that; It had just popped into my head.

Now I am attracted to electron microscopy, aerial photographs and organic forms that contain this interconnectedness; visual representation of the connections between everything in the universe; "the nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies, were all made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of star stuff" - Carl Sagan, Cosmos.

I was surprised to find out about trypophobia - the fear of irregular, tightly grouped holes. I find it fascinating that something I am attracted to can cause so much fear in an individual. This may be something I can explore in my work....
